The frame of the exterior door to the garage is rotted at the bottom, also a square post holding up the roof overhang by another door is rotted. I am contemplating cutting the rot and replacing with new wood. I don't think they were properly preped before. Please advise what precautions to take with the new wood or other suggestions on replacement. I am also interested in what to do with the aluminum threshold of the door.

paullis,
Welcome to the forums.
Wood, exposed to the elements, rots. That's a given.
As far as the door, replace it with a pre-hung door (my suggestion is either metal or fiberglass) and COVER it to get it out of the weather.
The post -- replace the ENTIRE post (don't try tp replace just the bottom foot or so!!) The post is supporting a roof, and the support is based on the post being CONTINUIOS from the top to the bottom -- NO JOINTS in it!

If you do go with a wood door - be sure to paint the top and bottom edge!!

Hi FOR THE DOOR, POST AT BOTTOM
Lefty's right!!!! Do 1 or the other although pre hung is $$$
or Just replace the jamb stock and threshold and not the door itself
If there's a Home Depot or Lowe's close by you can buy new stock "Legs" "Paint or Stain Grade" they won't have the stops W/Keelon kurf cut you will need to buy them seperatly
this is where the weather stip or keelon is placed after finnished Anyway
Remove the door Dont just pull the pin's on hinge they may be spring loaded if so UNLOAD THEM there will be a key slot or hex head alen type hole in the hinge pin
If so there's also a very small pin on the side of the hingepin when you turn the alen set you will have to remove the smaller pin to free the load, only then you can remove screws from the door and the jamb!
once the door is removed pull the casing off with a hammer,
then its easy from there take a sawzall cut the nails or screws that are holding jamb in place it will fall out! your theshold may be glued to the floor use a prybar to pull this up "It's attached to the bottom of jamb legs OR if it's screwd down remove the top of threshold and un screw it from floor
place this will be several $$$ cheaper
NOW
Place your old jamb along side of new jamb mark where the hings were to make exact duplicate put it in place useing a good level use shims make sure it's plumb! in/out left and right make sure the head stock is level very importaint! hang your door swing it closed. NOW where the striker hits the jamb mark it drill a new hole for both dead bolt and latch
once it's perfict close the door keep it flush with the side of jamb leg place the stop W/Keelon in place use finnish nail to secure stop's "YOUR DONE" thats easy
Now for the "POST " oooooooooooow
That sound's like a "Bearing point of the house
A little more work involved here, But it's an easy fix too!!!
This will be the ONLY WAY TO FIX IT "you or a contractor take your pick"
1-you will want a new post of course, accually 2
2-if the foundation is out far enough this will be GREAT if not you will have to create one!! ether dig a new footer! or place heavy timber's down like RR/ties several of them side by side then place like 2 or three squares of 1" plywood on top of them
3- HEAVY HYDROLIC JACK 50 ton or better "go rent one if you dont own 1"
You see where we are going with this right!
Straight up!!!
Place 1 of the new post on top of the jack under beem and just "slightly" take the weight of the house /off the post, NO more than that,!! You may cause stuctual damage! and remove old, Replace with new "THE SAME LENGTH" or you will end up with the "House that Jack buit"
4- If you do not feel comfortable with this GET A LICENCED CONTRACTOR
Remember your lifting your house up it's very heavy
Be careful and have fun with it
it's all easy
