Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Need Experts Again.. Peerless Right Angle Drive !

Hi again, have a quick question..


Trying to remove a 'blind bearing' in the right angle drive. According to the Peerless manual you should hold the housing while sharply tapping the back side of the housing with a rubber mallet to pop it out. It also recommended applying heat to the housing, being careful not to warp the housing.

Well I tried both methods and it still wont pop out !?

I don't want to damage the housing, the bearing is being replaced (it's bad).

Any tips, tricks or helpful hints anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

What are you working on, a 1:1 right angle gearbox, or transmission, or....? Is the case cast iron, aluminum...?

Hi Cheese, I believe it is a 1:1 right angle drive peerless ra-208-p91

The housing looks to be aluminum not cast iron.

I had another go at it tonight and the bugger still wont budge !?

I heated it up really good with my propane torch, so hot I could barely hold it. I gave it some really hard hits with the rubber mallet... still wont budge :wall:


So what would you guys do in this situation.

The bearing is pressed into the housing wall, there is a small gap behind it (2or3mm), the bearing needs to be replaced !

I know as a last resort I can bring it to a local repair shop, but so far I've managed to restore this 1975 tractor from the ground up all on my own and I'm on the home stretch.. I know I can do this:cool:

Can you take a drift pin at an angle from the outside and catch the lip of the bearing enough to drive it from the outside in? Or it not, you might be able to use a thin "L" shaped hook on a slide hammer to snag the bearing on the backside and pop it out.
