I have a 25 year 40" Bunton mower with a 11hp Briggs flat head motor. I went to measure the shaft while the motor was still mounted and I measured 6" from the bottom of the deck and about 1 1/4" OD. Can this be right? I thought most shaft were fairly universal. I have a model 253702, type: 013401, code 84051411. I'd appreciate any help.

Most are fairly universal, but if you measured that, then that's what it is. Most engines have a 1" diameter and 3 5/32" long crankshaft.

I pulled the pulley yesterday and sure enough it's a standard shaft so no worries. Thanks for your reply.

Per my Briggs parts lookup, the exact engine to replace your original engine is Briggs part number 217902-0015. I'm sure there are others that will fit and work but this is the one that Briggs recommends and, furthermore, there are no noted modifications to make to make the change-over, just bolt and go.
