My sister-in-law lives in the family home outside Seattle and some of the bricks on the fireplace chimney have lost the facing. The chimney is solid brick (no flew or metal stack) and is solid, straight and permanent. The only problem is that some of the outer facings of the bricks have eroded away over the years. This chimney is probably 30 or more years old. We would like to resurface some of the random bricks. The bricks are random colors from terra cotta to gray so it would not be a situation where they all have to match.
Would appreciate any suggestions/ideas on how to do this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Chimney crowns deteriorate and moisture penetrates behind the brick. With freeze/thaw, the faces of bricks spall off. They are literally blown off the brick. Mortar joints crack and mortar can spall out of joints.
Old bricks from crown down will have to be removed and new ones replaced. The crown will also need to be replaced, and the chimney should be capped.
The chimney should have a flue. If this is a working fireplace, a professional chimney inspection is recommended. If not working, damper should be sealed off to prevent heat loss.
