We have a large deck with a pergola. It has given us another room to use in the summer. The problem is it is too hot and sunny during the day. We've tried bamboo shades on top to filter out the sun but they went moldy after a few weeks. Any suggestions for shading this area (about 10 X 20).
Thanks!

if you cover it then it no longer is a pergola but a roof. tried wisteria vines? fast growing, purple/lavender flowers, creates shade, looks good but somewhat envasive.

what about another run of slats/joists at 90 deg. closer together. won't help as much with the sun directly overhead, but early and late it should help.

We used solar screen on top of our pergola. It blocks the UV rays but still allows warm air flow up and out. Works great for us and very reasonable in price. See www.noAds.com. They have the screen mesh with grommets on the edges if you want them.

I tried growing plants and stapling shade cloth to my pergola, but I ended up with an unsightly mess that made it difficult to maintain. Recently I purchased a set of retractable canopies that retrofit my existing structure. They look great and were easy to install. (They are removable for seasonal storage or occasional cleaning.)

I bought my canopy kit from a company called NoAds allowed.
