i have an older white-westinghouse clothes dryer. it was given to my wife and i by a close friend of hers. we've had it for several years now, but recently we have had a problem with a loud noises coming from it. it sounds like a belt slipping and and sometimes it sounds like metal grinding. i haave had an appliance repair man out last week and he took it all apart. he said that he could find absolutely nothing wrong with it. the noise went away for a few days but is now back again. what should i do?

Things that can squeak are: Motor shaft (bearing); idler pulley (tensioner) ; rear drum bearing (if you have that); or rear drum rollers (if you have that method to support the rear of the drum instead): drag from bad bearings of anything I mentioned (except motor shaft bearing) and then the belt slips. Or something out of kilter where blower wheel is hitting inside of housing or something caught up in blower wheel that can rub the housing, or the front glides are worn and there is metal on metal.

Did he use say some silicone spray on moving parts before he reassembled? Or don't you know. You might want to call him and ask, since you say it went away for 3 weeks then returned again. If he sprayed, ask him if he remembers what he sprayed.

We had the same problem with a westinghouse dryer we had. I ordered a new drum bearing kit for the back and it solved the problem. I got the kit from the sears website and it came with everything that was needed including the grease. You pretty much have to take the dryer completely apart to get to it though, Which is actually much easier than it sounds, Theirs not much to clothes dryers.

Yes. Doing dryers is easy. Looks impressive to others though, having parts strewn all over the floor. The hardest part about new bearing kit is installing the new ball-socket plate at back of drum, as they do not pretap the 3 screw holes. I found that rather than use a screw driver, to first insert screw, as they will indeed "bite" enough with finger turn, and then use vice-grips to turn them through the metal plate. I predo this first before trying to install on back of drum.

The last one I did (about 10 days ago) was worn out severely, as the tenants never called!, and the ball socket snapped right off the plate! I have also seen them scored. What happens is the metal ball socket wears away at the nylon receiving socket that you grease up. In due time the socket wears down. Beneath the nylon socket is a metal plate. Once the nylon socket is worn down to the metal plate, then the squeeking starts, and the scoring of the ball socket begins.
