I have a 2 level deck made from composite and a beadboard ceiling on the bottom level and I want to install can lighting in that ceiling but since the above deck is open and the rain can go through the top flooring I am having trouble figuring out a way to keep those can lights dry. The beadboard was installed so I don't have to look at the joists above and give it a finished look. My contractor cannot come up with a solution. Also am putting in outdoor fans but the water will run down the center rod and into the unit if I don't figure out a way to isolate these fixtures.

What is going to keep the beadboard dry?

I'm going to stand back on this one and see what happens. I'm afraid to say anything. I've never heard of building a deck like this.

The beadboard ceiling is made of vinyl similar to composite deck material like TREX. It does not rot. It is set at a pitch and the water from above runs down and out a channel at the end. It is very similar to a product from Home Depot called Underdeck. A hole is cut in the beadboard where the can lights are placed and they are in a soldered galvanized box that is closed and waterproof on 5 sides.

I think the answer to your problem is really simple. You have placed lighting in an area that is exposed to the weather and you have not used weather proof fixtures. Since water and electricity should never mix; you need to place all your wiring in plastic conduit and use lighting fixtures with weather proof housings. The alternative is to seal the deck above so it is weather proof.:wall:
