Hello Group,
I live in an older bungalow. Original portion built around 1920. Rear portion added later; 1950's.

The floor joists in the rear portion are built from 2x6 on 24" centers (yes..2x6 on 24" centers..). They sag in places. They have quite a bit of bounce.

I'd like to reinforce them with a perpendicular beam, supported by posts, rested on poured pads.

2 Questions:

1. Should I add extra 2x6 joists where I can insert them (plumbing and wiring permitting); splitting the 24" widths down to 12"?

2. What do you recommend for a beam? I've been thinking 4x6 treated post used as a beam. Or sandwiching 2x10's for a 10' long beam.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
