can i run a hid lamp rated for 480v on a 110v circuit?

You need the correct input voltage for this to work.

Does the ballast have a tap for 120 volts?

Normally most 480 v HID luminaire ballast useally are single voltage type.

But very few do have multi tap there.

What wattage the HID bulb it is ? and this will be indoor useage or outdoor useage ?

it takes 400w bulbs, will it run but not at full power?

If your ballast is wired for 480 volts it will not come on at all at 120 v.

the only way you get them to work is change the ballast get the proper one [ most 400w's useally have multi tap ballast for it ]
