It could be any number of problems. You need a certified tech to check the refrigerant side of the system.

There are several possible answers but if your room temperature is what the thermostat is set for then this is entirely normal.

However, if your room is significantly warmer than than the setting on the A/C thermostat it is possible that you have decreased air flow through the unit. Have you cleaned or changed the filter?

If the filter is clean have you removed the entire unit and done a thorough cleaning of both the evaporator (inside coil) and the condenser?

If all these things are okay then it could be a low refrigerant charge. This would also show up as the evaporator icing up.

That is a huge window unit. How big is the area it is cooling?
It's acting like a unit that's grossly oversized for the area it is to cool.

about 200 sq ft with an ambient temp of 85.

Good call Andrew. Two tons for 200 sq. ft., yep it's quite a bit oversized unless you live on Mercury. I cool my whole house (+/- 1500 sq.ft) with two tons. Has it ever worked right?

This could be something as simple as the thermostat being out of calibration. Remember, we're talking a "line-voltage-thst" here.

That thst dial (the one with the numbers), its scale goes from what number to what number? 1-5, 1-6, 1-10 ???
To which number you need to bring the knob before you hear the click sound that in indicative of the thst turning the compressor ON?

But as Andrew/Grady indicate, you have a grossly oversized unit for the space you're conditioning here.
