hey all
I have a 14.5 briggs in an mtd tractor that is not firing . i just put in a new alternator and she started and drove for about 100 yards then died. She will spin and cough but will never get over that. Have sprayed ether and she back fires like a gun. New plug put in also . New gas also. Had a real problem electrically with it and changed out all electrical components (except starter). What could be the problem?

Sounds like you didn't get the flywheel bolt tight enough and sheared the flywheel key.

Torque to 100 ft. lbs. and make sure the flywheel and crankshaft is free of any oil.

If you find that not to be the problem post the model and type numbers off the engine.

Good Luck
