i'm not sure how this would work, if someone has any helpful ideas they will be greatly appreciated.
we should have built the deck lower to the ground, but now it's too late. so if the pergola we want to build would attach to the house, under the gutter, it will only be 8 1/2 feet above the deck, which will feel very low.
what i was thinking about doing, is build it taller, and rest the 2x6's on the roof (asphalt shingles). if there is any way to make this work, how would i attach the beams to the roof in a way that it would be water proof and safe?

djsmiles9703,

Welcome to the Forums.

Don't lay your 2X6's on the asphalt roofing. They will rot and if they move, they will tear up the roofing.

Do this.

At every rafter tail, attach a 1/8" thick 1" by 8" angle bracket in a straight line across the roof. Use screws that are 2-1/2" long in all 3 holes on the bracktet. Seal all 3 screws heads with roofing mastyc and seal around the edge of the bracket to prevent water from getting under it. Ben the bracket to plumb, then attach a 2X6 ledger to the brackets. attach your 2X6's to that ledger with joist hangers.

(A hint-- Seal the brackets last, after the pergola is built, so you aren't tracking it around on the roof and getting all over everything!)
