My heat pump coils freeze over when the temp gets below 35 degrees. I replaced the defrost thermostat but no luck. What else could be the problem?

There are numerous reasons why this may be happening. When your unit goes into defrost is the outdoor fan motor still running?HP's also have a timer that are set for different intervals. This timer runs, hits a certain point and if the defrost stat is calling for defrost it will reverse cycle. If the timer is not working the defrost tstat can call for defrost all it wants. Is your reversing valve shifting?Place your unit to A/C, check to see if you are getting cold air.If the air is warm your reversing valve may be stuck. Also if the coil is frosted at this time,in the A/C mode, with the A/C running it should defrost the coil.PDF
