I am hopeful someone can shed some light on my problem. About 2 years ago, I bought a ceiling fan with a remote control for my bonus room. The remote control was necessary because the ceiling is very high. After about a week, the ceiling fan didn't seem to operate as well - it would only spin on low. A few days later, it stopped functioning all together. The lights still worked however. I was very busy at the time, and solving the problem wasn't a priority, so the non-functioning ceiling fan sat there until last week, when I purchased a new one. This time I purchased a Hunter ceiling fan which did not come with a remote control, so I bought a Harbor Breeze universal remote. After installation, everything worked just great - for about a day. A day or so later, the fan stopped functioning. This time I decided maybe the remote control wiring was to blame, so I re-wired the fan without the remote control. It worked just fine. Assuming something was wrong with the remote, I returned it to the home improvement store for another one. Brought it home, wired it up, and it worked great - once again, for about a day. Now the entire thing has stopped functioning once again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Why would it work correcty for a day or two and then just stop? The fan is obviously fine, because it works just great when wired without the remote. But the remote must not be the problem either, because I've tried two different brands, with the same end result. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does the fan have manual speed controls? If so, do you have the speed set at its highest setting? Are you using the same batteries from remote to remote? Use fresh batteries, and make sure they are installed properly. I know it sounds elementary, but we have to cover all the bases to rule out the dumb stuff. Last week we had a poster who we tried walking through a light wiring problem. Turned out to be a burned out bulb, so that's why we ask.

Yes, batteries are same brand and are new (have actually tried two different new sets.)

Yes, the instructions for the remote indicated that the fan should manually bet set on high, and we have done this.

After fooling around with it some more last night we discovered some more strange details: When the remote is engaged on high, you can hear that the remote tries to start the fan but the blades will not take off spinning. However, if you push the blades to get them in motion they will take off and all three speeds will work correctly along with the light and will stop correctly, using the remote. So obviously the problem is cold starting the fan into motion using the remote. As I said, when I stand on a ladder up close to the fan and depress the remote, I can hear the remote trying to start the fan, but to no avail. It is only when I manually give the blades a spin, that it takes off and starts to function....at which point the remote works fine. Also remember....for the first day or so, the remote started the fan just fine.

Also, here is some additional information about the wiring, in case someone might see a problem:

There is a black and White wire coming from the ceiling. These are wired to the black and white on the remote receiver. The receiver has black, white, and blue wires coming out of it. These three wires continue on to the light kit which has black, white, and black/white wires. The receiver to light kit is wired black to black, white to white and the blue wire from the receiver is connected to the black/white wire on the light kit.

All suggestions are appreciated!

This sounds like the fan speed is set incorrectly and does not have enough torque at low speed to start turning the blades.

Does the fan speed control slow the blades once it is running? Are all 3 speeds present?
