Engine was burning oil. I disassembled the engine and found the piston, rings and rod in great shape. I replaced the valves and seals and adjusted the valves at 006 in and the engine back fires when I thied to start it. I am assuming now that I did not get the timing marks correct. There are 2 holes on the gears and I assumed that they were the timing marks. The book I have is not very explainatory. Any ideas?

There should be a dot between two teeth on the camshaft that lines up with a line on a tooth on the crankshaft. Did you install a new head gasket? This may have been the problem.
