HI

Hubby and I are going to paint our family room and hall this weekend and I need recommendations. He wants to use Valspar from Lowes (we both say no to Behr from past experience). I am leaning towards Benjamin Moore but don't know which product from BM to use and what about Sherwin Williams and again which product. I am thinking about using an egg shell finish because satin is just a bit too shinny for me.

I am looking for good coverage and ease of working with it as we are both getting too old for this painting sutff.

Thanks!!!

Some of the painters on this site will go into specifics regarding exact product but in more general terms the following applies:

ALL brand names have within them multiple product lines that range from very low end to high end qualities.Generally speaking price is a determining factor for quality....you do get what you pay for.

Brands carried at big box stores that are controlled by them such as Behr AND Valspar have been impacted by the big box store mentality.Their formulations have been altered to meet price point demands.Brands/product carried by big box stores that are not controlled by them such as Glidden etc are also impacted by price point demands and so are of lesser quality then that brand/product in other retail situations.

Purchasing your product from a retailer with strong levels of saleshelp makes all the difference in getting the best product to meet your specific needs. The painters here will mainly push paint stores.I work for an Ace store that has saleshelp as good as any paint only retailer out there and have heard numerous stories of what my customers encountered at paint stores so the real story is to shop around, talk to people both in the field and neighbors etc and compare all aspects including saleshelp quality before making your final decisions.

Do not use or be swayed to use low quality tools and applicators for your job.the best paint on the market looks low end when low end tools are used.Buy your applicators from a retailer with salehelp that will help you pick out the best tools for your job.

Excellent points. Each brand has good, better, best levels of quality and price. Buy the best paint, brushes, and rollers that budget allows. And, do the proper surface prep.

Egg shell finish is one step up from flat. It is more durable than flat and can tolerate some wiping with mild, soapy water. Then, of course, there's semi-gloss and gloss.

I like satin, but I can see that you might think it's too shiny. Eggshell's a good alternative. I think you'll be happy with any of the paint brands you listed, as long as you don't buy their bottom of the line. You get the best advice in a paint store, rather than a paint department.
