I am in the process of buying a 21 ft boat and need to put a trailer hitch on my 2005 Ram 1500. The boat is about 4000lbs. How do I determine the hitch I need? I can't find the tongue weight of the boat and trailer. Is a hitch that holds 500lbs enough?

If you can afford the boat, you can afford the best quality hitch. That will be the least of your expenses in the future. Get the highest class rating that your truck will handle.

there should be a rv dealer in your area buy a good quality reciever hitch or have one installed. have fun buying gas for that boat. definantly get the best hitch you can find. money well spent. tongue weight should be about 10% of the total weight of the boat, make sure that you have a ground from the engine or battery to the light connector, don't rely on the hitch to ground the lights. don't let the installer use scotch lock connectors to install light con. they will corrode and cause you problems sooner or later.
