I have surfed through these forums looking for a solution.
The problem: Me and my father moved into an apartment complex and had no problems with the AC/Heater at first.
After 3-4 years, the AC gave out. We would have figured the apartment complex would send maintenance out every now'and'again to make sure our unit was working properly.
Alas, it didn't happen, and our ac went out.
I myself am 17 years old with little education in Industrial Engineering, so some of the terms/ideas discussed here were recognized and even understood in some cases.
Last night, I told myself that this was the final straw as I sat in balls-soup through >100 degree weather. So I asked a couple of friends whom were all astonished at my lack of knowledge of AC/Heating maintenance. . . And after reading through these forums, it's safe to say I myself am astonished at them.
Their only suggestion was to buy a filter. Which is a damned good start considering my old one was burned on one side.
So it was replaced, and we tried to start the unit. ((Placing the therm at below room temperature, and setting the nobs to (heat/cool)"cool" and (fan)"on")) And we heard every thing power on (inside and outside unit) and air was blowing through, but it was warm air. So we left it running for a little bit, and there was no change. So we decided to stop the unit.
This morning, I followed up on the AC investigation. I turned on the units again, and went outside to check the outside unit with the fan. The fan was not spinning, but there was a hum coming from the unit. So I went inside and saw there was no change to the temperature of heat. So I called up my friends again, and they told me I should throw ice water on the fan ((And after reading through some threads, I find that I think me and my friend were confused)) But, being as desperate and gullible as I am, I did the action. (Not to mention the unit hasn't worked on over a year and a half, so no major loss.) But, when I did throw the water in the unit, and turned it on. The fan still didn't spin, and the humming was still there. Except now, the unit started steaming up the water.
I came back inside and turned the unit off as quick as I could. Any answer/criticism/question/help would be MUCH appreciated, as any would help me.
There has been no maintenance done on my AC (Not to my knowledge) other than the change of filter me and my friends did. And we've been living in this apartment for about 6-7 years.

Andy...this is real simple...no A/C knowlege needed to help you.
You say an Apartment? As in renting?
Don't touch anything, don't do anything. Don't tell the Manager you touched or did anything other than the filter change. Tell them you want your A/C-Heat fixed, it's their problem!

Like said if you rent dont do are say you did anything to it.

Most of the time we try and tell people to check and change the air filter every 30to 90days the unit runs.
