Hardibacker is 1/2", as is drywall. But these are nominal measurements, and if I'm butting them up against each other where tile is going to be placed, I've got an uneven transition with the drywall slightly thicker. Will mud cover this sufficiently to make the seam suitable for tile, or will I have a bump that the tile won't like?

What I've done in the past with such a situation was to simply lay the tile mortar on thicker with a big-toothed tile trowel. The xtra mortar used projects the tile out just that little bit more so there's no odd transition lines shown through.
