I have been using a DeWalt compound miter saw for trim work in my home. I have noticed that if I have a piece of wood across the saw, resting on the fence on both the left and right of the blade that the wood is at 90 degrees to the blade. If, however, I have the piece resting on one side only, left or right, (trimming the end) the wood is tilted slightly toward the blade, making the cut not quit at 90. This is confirmed by holding a long straight edge across the fence and seeing a gap between the fence and the straight edge near the blade. Is this normal and if so, how do I cut an accurate angle if I am trimming a piece of wood and have resting on one side of the fence only?

What model number and type do you have? If you remove the sliding portion/s of the fence, you'll find the bolts that hold the fence to the table. It could be that loosening these bolts would allow you some adjustment. It's more likely that the casting is warped and would need to be replaced. If the saw is new, I'd take it straight back, or call your nearest service center. If the part is warped and it's still under warranty they should replace or repair it free of charge.

Thanks. I see the screws and will order a new fence. The current one does look warped. The saw is about ten years old and I am the second owner so who knows what happened to it in the past.
