I am going to be installing some new interior doors. I tore out all of the old doors and frames and have bought new prehung 6 panel doors for all but one, the bathroom...
The rough opening for the bathroom door is 28 inches. This doesnt seem to jive with any of the "standard" numbers I am seeing. I see 26, 30, 32, 36 etc.. Nothing for a 28. I COULD go the route of putting a door for a 26 inch opening, but the darn thing is only 25.5 roughly which seems like its tightening that door-way up. Cant do the 30 because then its 29 and some change and it just wont clear it.. Unfortunately, I did not measure the door when I tore out. I was only going by rough opening measurements!
What to do? I cant be the only one with a 28 inch rough opening to deal with?

Sometimes they get framed a little tight. You should be able to fit a 26" in. I know, that should normally require 28 1/2" RO, but thats giving you about 3/4" or so for adjustment. I think you'll find that a standard prehung measures about 1 5/8" larger than the nominal size. IE: 24" measures 25 5/8".

the entrance door to the bathroom is 28 inches wide??? a really small door! sounds like a closet door! if that is truely the case( only 28 inches rough opening) that means the door can only be about 26 inches(at least 2 inches for jambs and clearance).? if it were my door, i would(presuming it is not in a LOAD BEARING wall, remove the 2x4 jack studs(one at a time) and replace them with 1x4. that will give you about 1 1/2 inches more clearance . just a thought.
