A friend of mine has an installation that I've never seen before. She needs to replace her existing heater and have a couple questions..

1. The existing gas-fired heater is installed in their crawlspace in a 30" deep pit... it is unlined (dirt/rock). Does this meet code?

2. Does anyone make a gas-fired, low profile (shorty) 40-50 gallon water heater. I thought that someone did but I can't find one online.

First the pit is a accumulation area for gas. If there should be a leak or malfunction, a lot of gas can gather, a simple ignition is all it would take to clear out the crawlspace, and all above it. I would look for options above grade if the crawlspace won't handle the size.
