I just saw this ad for a 1999 Dodge Intrepid and was wondering if this sounds like a major repair. Here is the ad:
1999 dodge intrepid. 2.7L motor. Power windows and locks, 97,000 miles. Purple in color. Descent tires! Body is in nice shape. Motor needs a little work, was told it would be about $250 for parts!! Asking $1000 OBO. If interested call Jason @ xxx-xxxx
I called "Jason" and he said the problem is the "timing chain guide came loose and would have to be replaced." He said his mechanic said the part would be $250, not including labor (which he said would be 12 hours).
Something doesn't sound right here... is this a common problem with Intrepid's? I found the part online for around $20...

If anyone has any experience with this problem and explain it, I would appreciate it.

12 HOURS? Sounds like the motor has to come out to do the work.
