Hello all,
I've got a Maytag window air conditioner that has a coolant leak. I know this because I pulled the unit out of it's case and took it to a repair shop where they tested the pressure. The compressor and motor are good.
However, the fellow claimed that finding/repairing the leak was impossible. All he could do was replace the coil(s) which would cost more than the unit was worth. I think this is nonsense. This thing is only three years old and I believe it's just a leak - surely it's possible to have a leak repaired?

Finding the leak is not impossible. But, it will take time. Time is money, so the cost of repairing the coil may not be much cheaper. Also, in my experience, a repaired coil will develop a new leak within a short time. Leaks are generally caused by corrosion, and several areas are likely to be weak. I believe replacing the coils is the proper way to repair this unit. In any case, repairs will no doubt exceed its market value. Perhaps a new a/c may be cheaper in the long run.
