Theres a light fixture outside above my sons bedroom window(approx. 7' off the ground)on a concrete patio. There's a switch to it inside by the back door.We don't use the light,so I was wondering if it's possible to remove the light fixture and install an outlet. We basically want it to plug in rope lights and a radio when we bbq.
Any help on how to do this,if it can be done would be greatly appreciated.

I would guess that it all depends on what is behind the existing light. If there is a 2x4 box in the wall as in most cases, there would be no reason not to install a sealed outdoor cover and an outlet. The cover would be one of those aluminum covers with sealed flap doors and a foam seal between the cover and the box. You will want to be good and sure that you are sealed between the brick or wood on the house as not to let water down in there.

To make it code worthy, you will have to install an "in use" bubble cover. What type box is there? Is it octagonal or round? Just remember, the receptacle will always be switched, so is that what you want?

The NEC requires that exterior exits be illuminated. Removing the existing light fixture might create a Code violation.

What room is on the other side of the wall from the patio? It might be possible to extend a receptacle off an inside receptacle.

The back door has a lightfixture next to it.The bedroom window is maybe 8' from the door.I suppose the previous owners put it up to light up the patio at night. We don't because the light above the window would wake up our 4 year old. It's his bedroom.
I was just wondering if height would be an issue for an outdoor outlet.I don't mind the switch.Think it would be safer so we can switch power off when not in use.
The fixture is mounted on a round metal plate somehow attached to the vnyl siding.
I was bored so went outside and dismantled it.Just a small hole with 3 wires protruding.1 black,1 white & 1 bare copper wire.
Is that enough to mount an outlet?
Sorr I'm not the greatest at electrical issues.
Thank you.

Yes. You will have to mount a weatherproof receptacle box on the wall over the hole, allowing the wire to enter from the back. Seal the top and sides of the box against the wall with caulk. Install a GFCI receptacle and, as stated earlier, an "in use" receptacle cover.

Just to add what Larry said, use a screw-in non-metallic cable connector to secure the cable into the back of the weatherproof box. You do not need the locknut. Add a bead of good caulk behind the box to seal so rain does not get into the hole.
