Doors and Windows - can glass crack

I have double pane windows, about 20 years old, in Irivne, California. I want to put inside covering on the windows that get direct sunlite to cut down on heat coming in during the summer only. I was thinking of wood that fits tight, is right up against the glass, and painted white on the side facing out. Can this cause the glass to break due to trapped heat or something else?

No, it'll only crack from sudden dramatic temperature change. Hot oil paint or humid latex could stick to glass though if pressed for a long time.

why not use a plastic type window tint? keep heat out and allow you to see out?

Your best bet is something reflective if on the inside, but the glass and material will still absorb a good deal of heat from the sun. This is why the best solutions for blocking heat (besides LoE) are on the outside of the window, like shutters and awnings.

Good point. Another way to interceptheat coming in during the summer onlyis to plant a deciduous tree. Then every winter the "awnings" come down automatically.

Whatever happened to the old metal half window awnings (with green stripes on the front)? I remember as a kid having them on our house. They made sense!! You could open windows in the rain, open them on a hot day without the sun killing you (didn't have air conditioning), and listen to the rain hit them like a tin roof. Oh well, times change.

You need to take a trip up through some of the smaller towns in NC, WV, and VA. Still tons of those awnings there. I just think people have gotten so used to just turning up the A/C, and now they see it on their bills the next month, and look for other methods.

Why did all those old houses have the huge wraparound porches as well..shade of course.

that is why our new house will have a porch around 3 sides of the house.
