I am looking to convert my screened in porch to a sunroom for a family room. I am low on funds so this will be a do it yourself project. I live in Montgomery Alabama. I have purchased tile for the floor. Any suggestions?

luvingalabama,

Welcome to the forums.

You are talking about converting non-conditioned space (the screened in porch) to living space (a family room). It's not going to be a project that you want to try on a limited budget when you are low on funds.

Starting at the dirt, a patio doesn't have a foundation. Living space has to have one.

A screened in porch doesn't have to meet energy codes. Living space does.

Go talk to the people at your local bldg. dept. and find out all of the details involved in making this conversion BEFORE you start it.

Post a couple of pictures of your screened porch on a site such as photobucket.com and give us the urls or copy/paste the HTML code to your reply post so we can see what you see. While it may be possible, the more information we have the better information we can give back. We do this for a living, and you must have proper support, as Mike said. Without the blessings of the permit department or planning department you are spitting in the wind.
