I need to install a peephole (someone tried to break in, and I'm nervous). The instructions say to drill a 5/8 inch hole from the inside but not all the way through the door, and then to finish by drilling back from the exterior surface. I guess that's to guard against splintering the exterior surface, but how can you know when you drill from the outside that you are in the right place so that the holes will meet up exactly?

Thanks.

Is your door made of wood? If so, use a spade bit and have a helper watch from the exterior side of the door while you drill from inside. Stop as soon as the point of the bit begins to come through the exterior side. Then drill from the exterior to finish the hole.

If you start with a small drill bit - 1/16" - drill completely through the door, you will have a reference point on opposite side. Change drill bits, continue as planned.
