I'm planning on adding a cedar pergola to my 20'x19' deck, the pergola would cover the whole deck. My question is can I put up 20' 2x8's (or 2x10's or ?) beams without supporting them in the middle? The reason I want to do this is because I would prefer to not have a post "inside" the deck. The ends of the 20 footers would be attached to another beam that sits on 3 4x4 posts set on concrete. It might not matter but the pergola posts would also be attached to my existing deck which is supported by 8 4x4 posts and attached to the house with a ledger.
