I am building a free standing deck on side of my above ground pool- The deck is 10' X 12'.
I put (6) 4x4's as posts and then (4) 2 X 12's sandwiched for my main support beams- I tried everything but I'm guessing the lumber is never perfect. When laying my 2 X 8 joists on the support beams- the joists sometimes don't make contact with one of the 4 beams. Is it common practice to leave it?-
I've never seen pressure treated shims..... I would think over time- it would settle.

You are using joist hangers, right? If so, a little play is common, as the joist will rest on the bottom of the hanger anyway.

4X4 posts, then a dbl 2X12 for the beam. Install the 2X12's crown up. Same the the 2X8 joists -- install them crown up.
What's to shim??
Lay the deck boards on the joists and let it be. If you don't like the looks of it, wait 6 months -- IT'LL CHANGE!!
