I am thinking of adding foam insulation to my attic/crawl space. I live in AZ and according to the US Dept of Energy I should use R49. According to my original home inspection, the crawl space has 8.5" of R30. To get the most energy efficent return, should I remove the existing before adding new R49?

Hi Autumn,

I think you could just add a layer of R-19 on top of your R-30.

Just pull the vapor barrier, or, if you haven't already purchased, buy unfaced R-19.

NO foam! You should lay new battes on top of youe R-30 as connie said!

I think he is saying he has 8.5" of foam already... and wants to know if it ok to add a few more inches of foam to reach R-49 (another R-19).

Provided both foam products are similar, I don't see the problem with adding more.

If he has 8.5 in of closed cell foam he has R59.5 now
