I used my disposal earlier today and it worked fine. Later when I tried to use it, it would only hum, but not turn. I can turn the blade from both above with a pole and from below with the hex wrench. It turns freely by using the pole and the hex, but it only hums without grinding. I have cleaned out the stuff that was in it. Any thoughts about what to do now?

How old is the disposer? I replaced one today that was 18 years old. Reason for replacement??? It literally fell from the sink. The neck had corroded so much it just broke. So if it has alot of age on it, and the impellers move freely, your motor may be going (or gone) South. Time for a replacement.

It's about 4 years old.

We've replaced quite a few. Once you hear just the hum, it's time for a new one.
