I built my deck about 5 years ago and wrapped the posts with pine. I made the box 5 1/2 X 5 1/2 and slid it over the 4x4 treated post and shimmed and nailed them. Needless to say the pine is rotting and needs to be replaced. I did paint all cut ends, caulked and applied a quality paint to them every year.

I would like to re-do the posts with 1x6 Azek trim board instead of pine. My question is, I like the look of making the box with 45 degree corners instead of butting the ends. Will I have a problem with the seams on the end opening? I plan on using the Azek glue and 2.5 inch stainless finish nails for my finish nailer.

I got my hands on a piece of scrap and ran it through my table saw @ 45 degrees on the ends and just made a corner and tacked it and it looked great. seam nice and tight.

Is there anything I need to do different, maybe open the angle up a little bit?

Thanks,

Tom

Well since no one answered my orignal post, I will give you an update to where I am now. I made all new post boxes out of Fypon, same as Azek, but a few dollars cheaper. I need to know what to fill the nail holes with. I really dont want to paint them but if i fill the nail holes up with caulk or something, it wont match the color of the Fypon, so painting will be in order. Maybe someone can fill me in on what to do here.

Thanks

Tom
