Is it possible to add a switched ceiling light to a middle of the run outlet? The light I just installed is working, the outlet I connected to and evrything to the right of it is working. Outlets to the left of it are not working. I'm thinking maybe one of the neutrals came loose when I put the box back in the wall. It's late and I can't check it out till morning. Any advice would be appreciated

Yes, just adhere to the black-black and white-white rule until you get to your switch, where you will tie your whites together, and break the black and place the ends on the switch. Now, your problem may be related to a lifted neutral. How are you hooking it back up? Remember one wire, one screw, so if you have more than three wires to hook up to the receptacle, you will need to pigtail the cables to the screw.

What do you mean by "break the black and place the ends on the switch"? I started the extension by running cable from the outlet to the switch and then to the ceiling fixture. I did the pigtail connections in the outlet, matching cable colors throughout. Initially I thought this outlet was an end of run and figured it would be easy, ha ha.

When you switch a cable, you only break the connection on the hot wire (black). The neutrals are carried through as a single wire. When you turn the switch on, the black wire becomes complete, and when you turn it off, it "breaks" the connection and turns out the light. So the cable you have leaving the receptacle, going up the wall, eventually to the light, will have a switch in the wall somewhere, I assume. This is where you will cut the cable, reconnect the white wires, reconnect the bare wires and connect one to the green screw on the switch. The black wires will go, one on each of the two screws on the switch.
