I recently rented a house for about 2 and 1/2 months. I ask the landlord for my deposit back. He refused to give me the entire deposit. He had many excuses. He told me when I moved in that he was trying to sell the property and he wanted to be able to only give me a 30 day notice to move out. He told me that he would not hold me to his normal 6 month rental for this same reason. I gave him a 30 day notice when I moved. When I ask for my deposit he stated, he had to see how long it would take him to re-rent the property before he could tell me how much I would get back. After 14 days, he re-rented the property and his excuse was that the new renters had given him a bad check, so until they made good he couldn't give me my deposit. After 3 weeks he has given me nothing. What should I do now. Is his verbal agreement to not hold me to living there 6 months binding enough for me to get my entire deposit back?

Vebal agreements are hard to prove unless you can get it in writing and he agrees. :)

Sounds like the only written agreement you have is the 6 months rental agreement? What does it say about the deposit and what you're liable/responsible for if you move out earlier than 6 months?

I would take what you can if there's nothing else in writing and hope for the best.
