Just wanted to get an idea on how much kitchen lighting to have when we remodel. Kithen is about 150 sq ft. Ceilings are 9 foot high. A peninsula will be about in the middle of the room with two pendant lights overhead. Only other task light will be over the stove and maybe one over the sink. For general lighting we are using recessed cans. About how many would be right for this size kitchen? What size cans? We'd like to use CF bulbs. What wattage should I be looking at? Any other things I should be thinking about?

Thanks,
Jeff

A very rough guideline for spacing the fixtures is that the diameter of the cone of light is roughly equal to the mounting height. This is very dependant on trim and bulb selection.

Your mounting height will be from the ceiling down to the work surface.

I feel that 4" recessed are too small to light a kitchen. I normally use a 6" with a step baffle trim. Alzak trims look nice too but are very pricey.

What are the room dimensions? Are you adding undercabinet lighting? If so what type?

Room is about 15X11. It is at the back of the house with entries from the front foyer and the dining room to the side. We are opening the door to the dining room from 3' to 6'. No undercabinet lights. Actually, no wall cabinets from which we could attach under cabinet lights.
