Hello,
I need to add a piece of 2" by 8" to an existing 2" by 8"
joist. I want to wait until it shrinks before installing. What is the estimate of time needed for it to shrink?
It will be installed on the end of the joist where it will rest on a beam. If I install it now, it won't be resting on the beam when it shrinks. I live in Philadelphia, Pa. if the climate matters.

Depending on the humidity, it can dry in as little as a few weeks. The biggest problem with allowing PT wood to air dry is it likes to warp  it is usually best to nail it up asap.

Then I will do that. I can always place a shim of ptw where it shrinks away from the beam.
