We purchased six pendant lights to hang from the ceiling of our portal. The inspector has told us we will need to replace them with exterior rated lights. They were quite expensive, cannot be exchanged at this point and after looking at over 3000 styles and choosing these, do not want to shop for something else. I am wondering what the difference is in the construction of an interior vs exterior rated lamp, which if I knew, I could possibly adapt these to comply.

you should able find the UL label at the pendent base [ you will have to look inside of it ] and it will tell you if that is dry location or damp location or wet location.
that is the only way it will classifed properly and portal area is useally classifed as either damp location or wet location depending how it set up.

Marc, Thanks for the response. The company I purchased from said the pendants are rated for indoors (dry location). My question is: Can I remake the light to satisfy a damp location requirement? What is the difference in lamp structure, housing and/or wiring between damp or dry ratings? If I knew that answer, I could possibly figure a way to make it acceptable for a damp location.
