I just replaced the Strainer Basket Assembly under my kitchen sink, as well as the drain tail pipe and P trap due to leaks from old rusty pipes. Apart from these leaks, which only began this week, the sink has always drained just fine.

The strange thing is that once all compression nuts were tightened and no water leaked at all, the sink stopped draining.

The new drain tail pipe is PVC and the P trap is chrome. Also, the drain tail pipe has a connection to allow our dishwasher to drain, just in case this might mean something to someone.

I've looked all over this forum and googled the issue, but I can not find a solution anywhere.

How far back into the pipe sticking out of the wall did the new tailpiece slide? Far enough to be against an elbow?

Should be in pipe no further than 1 1/2" or so.

As said: Interesting problem.... It's a longshot, but check the tailpiece inside at the point the dishwasher drain connects. It's possible, but a longshot, that some of the plastic from the casting didn't get cut away properly, plugging the tailpiece...

You're going to have to do some deductive detective work. Attach your pieces one by one - and run water down the drain - tailpiece - p trap - piping to the wall.... see if you can figure out where the problem starts.... (have a bucket handy)...

One of the geniuses who knows a thing or two about physics will probably understand this, but I still don't. Apparently, with the pipe open all day (after I removed the P trap) there wasn't enough suction in the drain.

Each time it backed up I would use the plunger and it would clear it, but just for that time. Then it would back up again a minute later.

I solved it by running the water continuously and plunging the drain for one full minute. Now, it drains every time with no problem.
