Hello:
I have an MTD Yard Machine 16.5HP, 2 cylinder B&S, 42" Lawn Tractor. It has been running fine for almost 10 years.
The only way it will now start and run now is if the choke and throttle are both on max.
If I cut back on either the throttle or the choke, it will sputter and stall. This happens with the air cleaner on or off.
I sprayed some carb cleaner in the carburetor and that did not help. The carburetor has never been taken apart.
Could the carb be gummed up inside? Any other possible causes. Any fixes?
Thank you for any advice,
Trolleyop

To me it sounds like it's time to tear the carb down, give it a good bath in a cleaner & install a float & a kit.. I'm thinking that after 10 years, It may be cheep insurance to overhaul the fuel pump as well (if equipped) Good Luck, Roger
