I just got the mower deck put on and it does not disengage when lifted up. How does it disengage, is the belt supposed to slip when it is lifted up to stop the blades? It is a 2003 MTD 42" deck on with B&S engine.

The deck is supposed to raise and move forward enough to loosen the belt, and there should be a brake pad under each footrest that hits the top of each blade pulley to stop the blades.

Thans ! The brake bads are there, but belt doesn't loosen when raised very much. Maybe wrong belt.

First verify you have the correct belt installed and both belt guides near the engine stack pulley are not bent out away from the pulley.

If both the above are correct it's possible the deck lift system (support arms) have worn throwing the adjustment out of whack, Below is the adjustment procedure.

Good Luck

My model is a bit different but same very similar. my model number is 13AN682G129 serial A203B70148. That adjustmet helped a lot, but still spins some. I'm sure new pads for the brakes would help they are old and hard. It works good enough to use, then taking the deck off anyways till next year when the weeds come back.

thanks for the help
