Whats the best way to tell if damage to wood is termite damage or moisture damage? Our door frame for the door that leads to our deck has an area on the lower section of the trim that looked discolored and just fell apart when I touched it. Its only about a 3 inch long area but rest of the trim is solid. I cant tell if its termite or moisture damage. There are no live termites in the wood and no sign of mud tubes. Terminix came out to look and they said it was just moisture damage, but I have heard they will generally say this if they dont see any live termites. Is there anything else to look for?

If you can post a picture of the damage, we can tell you, easily. You van post a link here, to any photos you upload to photobucket...or, if you have a Google account, upload using Picasa.

"I have heard they will generally say this if they dont see any live termites." They generally say this because it is generally the truth. It sounds like you have moisture damage which is common on exterior doors.
