Hi -
I'm building a secondary dwelling in my back yard and wondered what the pros/cons were of having a small washer/dryer unit (stacked style) inside the house vs out in the garage or having no unit at all. I'm trying to make it as fully-functional as possible but still be practical with space and cost. Any insight on value gained or value lost by placing the unit inside the house.
Thanks!
Alex

In sizing your electrical service to the outbuilding, you have to reckon everything going at once. Obviously the dryer could bump that up a (costly) notch.

Thanks -
Aside from the electrical, is there anything else? I plan on running enough electrical to the dwelling, but I want to make sure the w/d is a better selling point inside a house than outside.
Thanks Again

What's the purpose of the building?

"Secondary dwelling". Buyer will be looking at the rental potential.
I would make the laundry accessible to all occupants, without going into each other's suites.

If rental is the goal, we have found that providing hook-ups for a washer and dryer helps, but providing the machines themselves doesn't seem to make any difference in getting them rented.

OH, don't make me play the "code" card again!:) If you are building a residence in your back yard, you need a permit and you need to build according to local code.
If you don't, and this domicile is reported by an unhappy neighbor, you may have to tear it down. Also, insurance will not cover this building unless it is permitted and approved.

I think the permit is obvious here, besides that's not what they were asking. In most localities you need a permit to do anything but alter finishes.
Anyways, if it were me i'd make it indoors. akjarvie you are asking a very subjective question. Do you think an indoor w/d room is better than outdoor, making the dwelling more valuable? i do. You just need weigh that value against the space lost (minimal) and the extra material cost. we cant really do that for you.
