I have a question that I cannot find an answer to! Currently, we have an acrylic insert shower in our master bedroom. I would like to tile it but am unsure if I can tile directly over the insert, or if I have to tear it out and start fresh. I am assuming that I will need to tear it out, but wanted some advice from all of you pros in this forum! Thank you all in advance for your replies!

I think your instincts are good...I would remove the insert, install backer board and tile.

Yeah there is no way you'd want to tile over this surface. Now if it were those thin flat vinyl sheets that are sometimes used for a shower (oftentimes these are adhered right over sheetrock), I would say it's possible to apply the backer board over that without ripping anything out. But I don't know if your mixer valve trim would fit over the adding thickness of the backer board and the tile.
