We have a Trane XL13I. We noticed a problem when our power bill went from 5000 to 10000 kwhs. Noticed that the auxillary heat was coming on a lot more than normal. Outside unit would be running and then going immediately into defrost mode every time. I thought it may have been thermostat and that was replaced with a honeywell model. Auxillary heat is not coming on as much as it was but does come on above 32 F. Defrost is still coming on after compressor runs its cycle every time without any ice build up.

Technician noticed LED (green) was flashing three times. He reset it but we noticed it is still doing it.

The whole system was shut off and when the power was restored the light was flashing on and off slowly but when the heat pump ran a cycle it went back to three fast flashes and then a pause.

The filter and the coils inside the air handler are clean. The filter is the pleated kind.

Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

5000kwh's! here that is $750!
until it is fixed, i'd manually defrost it.
But that is me; i dont play by the rules.

Unfortunately the tech has been here twice - not Trane - that guy showed up once, said there was nothing wrong and hasn't come back even though he said he would.

The other guy replaced the thermostat and is supposed to come back again this week for another $120.

unplug the timer output, where it plugs into the defrost relay, that will stop the defrost cycling until u figure how to fix it. switch to ac when u lose heat, to defrost.
when my neighbors get new ac/hp, i take out the small parts from the junk units for spares.

The whole system was shut off and when the power was restored the light was flashing on and off slowly but when the heat pump ran a cycle it went back to three fast flashes and then a pause.

That on and off light is OK .Indicates normal operation compressor can be in call or not in call.
3 flashes/sec Defrosts terminated on time override. Book said replace defrost control.
