We have purchased a bathtub with a 3 sided tile flange for installation into a 3 wall alcove, but it does not have the typical front apron. The purpose for this is to tile up the front of the bathtub and up the shower walls. We are using 12" tiles in our design. I have two primary questions, and several sub questions:

1) When installing the CBU on the walls, should the CBU overlap the tiling flang, or is it cut just above the flange?

a) If it overlaps the flange, will there be a bulge?

b) If it is cut above the flange, do you apply thinset over the tiling flange between the gap from the tub and the bottom of the CBU and apply the tile overtop? Will it adhere to the integral tiling flange?

2) When framing out the bathtub, should we measure it so that when the CBU is installed over the framing at the front of the tub it is flush with the downward lip? Or, should the framing go back further so that the CBU sits behind the lip so that the tile is flush with the downward lip? How much, if any, of an overhang is acceptable for the tile? Hopefully the attached picture of the bathtub will help this question make more sense (Note that the bathtub is not sitting in it's final resting place).

You can shim the studs out so that the backer board overhangs the tub flange or you can undercut the studs to accomodate the flange thickness. You can also stop the backerboard at the top of the flange and then allow the tile to overhang. Any gap is filled with caulk.

I shim the studs. I rip strips from a 2X and tack them to the studs. The backer board will then overhang the flange w/o a flare or bulge.

I've only done a couple of tubs without an apron. I built a deck from 2X4's with the tub lip set back a bit from the edge (3 or 4 inches) enough to provide a horizontal surface for tile.

Thanks, Wayne. Shimming the studs sounds like a good idea.
