I have a Trane XE900 outside unit that is about 20 years old, whole unit in and outside is original with house. My question is what is the best programable thermostat that will work with my old "7 wire" unit. Most of the units I have looked at Home Depot and Lowes have fewer wires. Someone recommended a Baystat 240? Looking to save a little electricity and add comfort with a programable . Any help is greatly appreciated!!

No disrrespect intended, but you shoul dbe looking at a complete system. Lifespan of a heat pump is nowhere near 20 years and while yours may seem to be working fine, It will one day break down and not be worth repairing. If you look around now, it will not be as tough of a decision when the day comes to replace. I would not spend the money on a setback thermostat. All you have to do is disrupt the way that unit has been working and you will start its demise.
Obviously this is just my opinion.

I agree with Ken on what he has said.. Start planning on saving some money on a new equipment.
When and if you do get a new equipment, look into the Honeywell IAQ stat. Honestly, heat pump are best to set it and forget it to advoid the electric heat back up kicking in .
