I installed one of these last November and used it all winter. Thought I'd post some info because I am real happy with it.
It has cast-iron heat exchangers inside the fireplace that the logs sit on, and a fan unit which sits outside the fireplace. It works best with glass doors (I wouldn't bother without the doors). Often measured 250-degree air coming out of it, and it added very noticeable heat to the house. Had my reservations that the fan would hold up, but we ran it nearly all day and night many weekends this winter, and several hours most evenings. Overnight I would often let it on low if there was a lot of coals and wood left in the fireplace.
It's no substitute for an Insert stove, but it doesn't cost near as much either. Plus you keep the full glass door look.
