I am currently in the process of converting my home office in to a full bathroom, nothing fancy. I purchased a prefabricated shower. Question... Do I have to tear down the walls to the bare studs or can the prefab shower be installed against the painted/textures wall? Do I need to install backerboard, cement board, or some kind of moisture protective layer? I know I have to tear the walls a bit to bring through the plumbing. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

This really depends on size. Typically, shower enclosures are secured to the studs.
It doesn't take long at all to rip out the drywall, 5-10 mins max.
No need for a backerboard if this is a 3 wall type enclosure. Use a normal drywall for the ceiling.
