My 2nd story heat pump and air handler needs to be replaced(they're over 20years old)
and I've had a couple HVAC guys out for estimates.
I've decided that I want to go with a 2.5 ton 13 SEER Trane Heat pump and
variable speed air handler to replace the existing 2.5 ton system(also Trane).
My main questions and concerns are regarding replacing the lineset,
More than 1 HVAC contractor told me that replacing the lineset wouldn't be necessary.
I've also been told that it should be replaced, but if it is, it would need to be run up
the side of the house into the attic via the soffit in the roof, since the original lineset
is run through the walls/center of the house and that location cant be reused.
Doing this would look extremely bad/ugly as the location for this is on the rear
of the house and would be visible by anyone sitting on the back deck.
There really is no good/un-obtrusive location to run a new lineset.
If I go with keeping the existing/old lineset will I regret it further down the road?
How important is it to replace the lineset when replacing the condenser/handler?
I'm thinking of sticking with the current lineset and if it needs replacement in several years
then do the replacment, does this sound like the best option?

If the lineset is properly sized for the new unit there is no reason to replace it I would have to pull up your model to be sure but I am guessing you will need a 3/4" 3/8" lineset if that is what you have no problem

If you're switching over to R-410 then it would be best to replace it but if not feasable could be re-used if properly flushed and the correct size like Mike stated. Your contractor can cover the lineset so it looks nice.
Here is an example. http://www.slimduct.com/ Some contractors use different brands and some simply use gutter downspouts. The end result usually looks pretty good.
